Bhavnagar University is an oldest seat of learning in Saurashtra Region of Gujarat state in India. This university has a span of only 25 years and has two main campuses spread over about 200 acres of green land. This university was established vide Gujarat Government Act N26 of 1978 and has been covered under the department programs of the University Grant Commission (UGC), New Delhi, a central government enterprise. The university is a member of association of university of the common wealth countries. It is proud of this university that is one of its constituent colleges of ‘Shamaldas college of Arts’, Bhavnagar the world famous leader of freedom movement of India “Rastra Pita” Mahatma Gandhi. Shri  Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi had studied.

The University has, at present 17 Post graduate departments,12 Post graduate centers,4 constituent colleges,27 affiliated colleges,4 recognized institutes and 16 self finance  Post graduate diploma courses under different facilities Arts, Commerce, Science, Rural studies, Law, Education, Engineering and Technical, Medical, Bio-Informatics and Management.

Fundamental mission of this university is its commitment to pursuit of truth and beauty to free development exchange and debate of ideas, careful and stimulating dissemination of knowledge and scientific and social critism. Each of these commitments involves teaching, research and services to the community in various forms.

More than 15000 students at undergraduate and about 2000 students at post graduation level including researchers are participating in 26 different courses offered by the Bhavnagar University. A central university library has been established in old campus with several facilities like Internet, Reference reading rooms, Library software to access information from any other university libraries. This library has about 95000 books on different subjects.
